5 Quick Tips for Improving Your Landing Page Performance

A critical component to improving results for your search marketing, email or other online campaigns is to optimize your landing page(s). It is a waste of advertising dollars when you buy a specific search keyword and then simply send people to your home page where there may not be any tie into the keyword or ad copy that you posted.

Here are five quick things you can do right off the bat to improve your landing page performance:

1) Have a clear goal for the landing page. Decide exactly what you want customers or prospects to do when they get to your page. Don’t try to be all things to all people: decide if you want them to learn more, sign up, or buy, and then tailor the page to accomplish your main goal.

2) Be consistent with the advertisement.  If you said “Purple Carpets on Sale” in your banner ad or search copy, make sure that your landing page clearly shows purple carpets on sale. Even better, have the same copy in your heading and make sure your brand ‘look and feel’ is the same.

3) Don't scare off your customers. Don’t fill your landing page with tricky, creative, or fancy technology just to wow them. This can frustrate visitors and may result in them clicking away instead of clicking through.

4) Simplify layout. The age old rule of KISS applies to landing pages. . People have come to your landing page looking for answers. Keep the page simple with the appropriate amount of graphics and copy, and with enough white space so that people see the key message. Avoid cluttering up the page with distracting elements like advertising banners, links, or unnecessary blocks of information.

5) Place the call to action at the top of your landing page. A link to buy the product or 'subscribe now' form reminds the visitor why they are on your website. Place it near the top of your page so that users who want to click right away can find it easily. For those needing more information, place a second or third call to action farther down on the page.
